Lab Supply is delighted to celebrate Dr Ghader Bashiri, the recipient of the 2025 Lab Supply Research Excellence Prize, awarded at the New Zealand Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NZSBMB) Annual Conference, held in Rotorua from 11–14 November 2025. As Gold Sponsor of this year’s conference, Lab Supply continues to proudly support the biochemistry and molecular biology community, recognising the researchers whose work defines and advances these essential scientific disciplines.
Honouring Outstanding Research and Leadership
The Lab Supply Research Excellence Prize is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the NZSBMB. It acknowledges a distinguished New Zealand-based biochemist or molecular biologist who has made a significant contribution to the scientific community, including the building of research teams, service to the discipline, mentoring and outreach.
This year’s winner, Dr Ghader Bashiri, perfectly embodies these qualities. After earning his PhD in Structural Biology at the University of Auckland in 2009, Dr Bashiri has spent his career exploring the molecular machinery that drives life. Since receiving the Sir Charles Hercus Health Research Fellowship in 2017, he has led an independent research group, Bashiri Lab, bridging fundamental science with real-world impact, aiming to develop innovative strategies to improve human health and address climate-related challenges.
“This award is truly special to me as it recognises not only our research but also the incredible teamwork that makes it possible,” says Dr Bashiri. “What makes this honour even more meaningful and humbling is that many previous recipients are scientists and individuals I deeply admire and respect, and I greatly value the privilege of being part of this group.”
Recognising and Supporting Scientific Excellence
The Lab Supply Research Excellence Prize includes a cash award, complimentary registration to the NZSBMB Conference, and the opportunity to deliver a plenary award lecture, a highlight of the annual meeting.
Lab Supply’s Adam Hogue-Spurway and Bridget Lamont attended the 2025 conference to celebrate New Zealand’s thriving molecular bioscience community, with Adam himself presenting the award to Dr Bashiri.
